Finding the Middle Path through Adolescence
Presented by Nicole Rafanello, PhD
Dr. Rafanello established her practice in Morristown, New Jersey in 2012. Her specialties include Dialectical behavioral Therapy (DPT) for adolescents and adults, police evaluation and treatment, and forensic psychological assessment.
Our job as parents, guardians, educators, and family is to raise our children into independent adults and to help them become who they are supposed to be. This means instilling values while respecting the adolescent’s self-determination. DBT theory suggests using interpersonal effectiveness skills and the Middle Path technique in the parent/adolescent relationship.
This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenter receives no commercial support and reports no conflict of interest regarding this presentation.
Learning objectives: At the end of the program the attendee will be able to
1. Explain the 3 DBT skills of DEAR MAN, GIVE and FAST and know how to integrate them into therapeutic work with adolescents and families.
2. Describe the balance between instilling values and respecting the self-determinism of the emerging adolescent and adult.
3. Apply dialectics and the concept of the Middle Path in DBT to all relationships, especially with adolescents, their parents, and others.
