Geriatric Psychopharmacology Update:  Pearls and Pitfalls in the Treatment of Older Adults

Presented by Kacy Richmond, M.d., M.A. and Mark Hugick, MD, M.B.S.

Dr. Richmond is a board-certified psychiatrist practicing in Morristown as part of Pegasus Psychiatry Associates.  She was a Fulbright Scholar in Chile, and is fluent in Spanish.    Dr. Hugick is a board-certified psychiatrist practicing in Morristown as part of Pegasus Psychiatry Associates.  He was the Promise Clinic’s Lead Coordinator during his final year of residency, providing psychiatric consultation for disadvantaged populations in New Brunswick, NJ.

This talk will cover new medications for the treatment of Alzheimers (donanemab, FDA approved in 2024, and lecanemab, FDA approved in 2023) and new medications for the treatment of mood disorders and their use in the elderly.  We will review the pathophysiology of Alzheimers, medications that decrease and increase the risk of dementia, and special considerations in the psychiatric treatment of older adults.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenter receives no commercial support and reports no conflict of interest regarding this presentation. 


Learning objectives:  At the end of the program the attendee will be able to:


1.      Explain the importance of avoiding anticholinergic medications (especially over the counter) in the elderly.

2.      Describe signs of anxiety and depression in the elderly.

3.      Explain the new treatments for dementia.
