Pawsitive Psychology: Ethical and Efficacious Animal-Assisted Interventions in Clinical Practice (in person only)
Presented by Laura Palmer, PhD, MSCP, C-AAIS, ABPP
Bonne Prince Harry, THDS, CGC, TDCH (Certified Therapy Dog, AKC Therapy Dog Supreme, Canine Therapeutic Assistant)
Dr. Palmer maintains an independent practice in lifespan neuropsychology and psychological services in Madison, NJ. She is also a Certified Animal-Assisted Intervention specialist. Bonne Prince Harry is a Teddy Bear English Goldendoodle, and is Dr. Palmer’s canine therapeutic assistant.
Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have moved from the margins of practice to a recognized, evidence-supported adjunctive modality. Yet many clinicians who would like to integrate a therapy animal into their work are uncertain where to begin, what the ethical guardrails are, and how to do it well. This interactive presentation offers psychologists a practical, standards-based roadmap for ethically and effectively incorporating a therapy dog into clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Define key terms in the field and identify their distinct purposes, training requirements and legal protections.
2. Describe the current evidence base for animal-assisted interventions across the lifespan and populations.
3. Identify a structured decision-making framework for determining when AAI is indicated or contraindicated.
This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students.
