Overcoming Perfectionism:  How to Stop Moving the Finish Line (hybrid)

Presented by Matthew J. Zakreski, PsyD

Dr. Zakreski is a clinical psychologist who uses an eclectic approach to meet the specific needs of his neurodivergent clients.  He is the co-founder of The Neurodiversity Collective, LLC, co-host of the podcast “Nerding out on Neurodiversity,” and author of Neurodiversity Playbook:  How Neurodivergent People Can Crack the Code of Living in a Neurotypical World.

Perfectionism is often accompanied by critical self-evaluations and concerns regarding others’ evaluations.  When perfectionism comes with being gifted, it is expressed through emotional and intellectual intensity which can make treatment difficult.  Successfully managing perfectionism can be about releasing anxiety as well as moving from negative to positive perfectionism.

Learning Objective   --   Participants will be able to:

1.     Identify perfectionism as an anxiety disorder and delineate between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism
2.     Identify social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral elements of perfectionism and describe how to help clients develop skills to address these.
3.    Describe strategies to help clients identify systemic challenges that maintain their perfectionism and remove them.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenters receive no commercial support and report no conflicts of interest regarding this presentation.
